Free tool · C2C crochet

C2C bobbin calculator.

Bring your own corner-to-corner graph: paint it, paste it or import the picture or PDF you bought. The tool follows every colour area through every diagonal row and tells you how many bobbins to wind, how much yarn goes on each, and which bobbin works which tiles in every row. Nothing leaves your device.

  • The bobbins of your graph, counted. The example is our Reindeer Hearts C2C Blanket: 91 bobbins, never more than 9 hanging at once, with the yarn to wind on each.
  • Every row names its bobbin. Join a new one where it says *, cut where it says ✂, and carry short gaps inside the tiles if you like.
  • Picked up where you left it. A bobbin only carries on into the next row next to where it stopped; otherwise the plan starts a new one.
  • Checked against your graph. The written rows are read back and rebuild your graph tile by tile before you see them.

Your graph

Bought a graph? Load it, mark the tiles and we read every one. The file stays on your device.

Paste a graph as text

One line per row, top row first. A full stop is the first colour; every other symbol becomes the next colour.

Colours

Pick a colour, then click or drag on the graph. Click a tile of the same colour to clear it to colour A.

Size in tiles

Up to 120 × 120 tiles and 12 colours.

Yarn and tile
Carrying

Carrying works the yarn inside the tiles of another colour instead of cutting it. C2C tutorials advise 1 to 3 tiles at most.

Import a graph
  1. Drag a box around the tiles only, not the row numbers.
  2. Set how many tiles across and up, so a dot sits in the middle of every tile.
  3. Import, then compare it with the original and fix any tile on the graph.

Your bobbin plan

Wind, join, carry and cut.

Everything below follows the graph above. In the map each bobbin has its own shade of its colour and its name on the tile where it starts.

Engine checks

  • All 100 diagonal rows follow the increase/decrease rules at both edges
  • 2520 tiles in total (45 × 56)
  • Every row's written colour counts add up to that row's tile count
  • The 100 written rows, read on their own, rebuild every tile of your graph
  • Replaying the 91 bobbins row by row gives every row's colours in working order
  • All 365 times a bobbin carries on into the next row, it is picked up next to where it stopped (at most 2 tiles away)
  • Each of the 2520 tiles belongs to exactly one bobbin, and each colour's bobbins add up to its tiles
Every row with its bobbins (100 diagonal rows)

The letter is the colour, the number the bobbin; numbers before them are tiles. * = join a new bobbin here. A bobbin named twice in one row is carried inside the tiles in between. ✂ = cut after this row, leaving a 15 cm (6 in) tail. Start at the bottom right corner: odd rows ↗, even rows ↙.

How many bobbins?

One for every area of colour.

In C2C each area of colour in a diagonal row needs its own bobbin. When the area carries on into the next row, the same bobbin carries on, as long as it is hanging next to where the next row needs it. When an area splits, a new bobbin joins; when two areas meet, one is cut. The calculator follows every area through every row.

For the Reindeer Hearts C2C Blanket graph (45 × 56 tiles, 4 colours) that is 91 bobbins with yarn carried across gaps of up to 2 tiles, or 106 if you never carry. The background alone is 61 bobbins: the motifs cut it into many areas.

How much to wind: each tile takes about 29 × the tile size of yarn (about 55 cm for a 1.9 cm worsted tile), plus any yarn carried, two 15 cm tails and 10%. Bobbins over 50 m cover big areas; work those straight from the ball.

Questions

Before you wind a bobbin.

Which corner do I start from?

The bottom right corner of the graph, as most C2C graphs are drawn: row 1 is the single tile in that corner, odd rows go up towards the top right (↗) and even rows come back (↙). If your graph starts in another corner, turn the picture before you import it so its first tile is at the bottom right.

Can I use a graph I bought?

Yes: import the picture or PDF, drag a box around the tiles and set how many tiles across and up. Check the result against the original and repaint any tile it misread. The file stays on your device; nothing is uploaded.

Should I carry the yarn or cut it?

Carrying across one or two tiles saves bobbins and ends to weave in; longer carries pucker and can show through. Choose "Never carry" if your colours are very different, and the plan gives every area its own bobbin.

My graph has too many colour changes in one row. Is that a problem?

Check it in the chart checker, which marks busy C2C rows. This calculator plans the bobbins for whatever graph you give it.

I want a name on a blanket.

Use the crochet name blanket pattern maker: it draws the name, sizes the blanket and plans the bobbins with the same engine.

Is it free?

Yes. No account, nothing uploaded: the plan is made in your browser.
