Crochet letter & name graph generator.

Type a name and get a crochet graph, centred in your stitch or tile count. For C2C it numbers the diagonal rows, counts the tiles and estimates the yarn; for tapestry crochet it writes out every row colour by colour. Download a PNG or print it to PDF, no sign-up.

How it looks crocheted

Each square of the graph is one C2C tile: a chain-3 and three double crochets, worked on the diagonal.

C2C, tapestry or intarsia

One graph, three ways to crochet it.

The letters are the same; what you count changes. The numbers below are the generator's own, for EMMA in tall letters.

C2C letters

In corner-to-corner crochet each square of the graph is one tile, a chain-3 and three double crochets, and the rows run on the diagonal from the bottom right corner. EMMA with a plain row above and below is 207 tiles in 31 diagonal rows, about 44 × 17 cm in worsted. The generator writes out every row, tile by tile.

Tapestry crochet letters

Work single crochet and carry the colour you are not using inside the stitches, so there are no floats at the back. Change colour on the last yarn over of the stitch before. Worked flat, EMMA has up to 16 colour changes in one row and 89 in all; the written rows list them in the order you meet them.

Intarsia crochet letters

Each colour area gets its own bobbin and nothing is carried. Centred in 45 stitches, EMMA has up to 19 colour areas in one row. Carrying the background yarn inside the stitches and giving each letter one bobbin brings that down to 5.

Reading the graph

Which way each row goes.

Flat, in rows: row 1 is the bottom row and is worked right to left; row 2 comes back left to right, and so on. On the graph each row number sits on the side where that row starts. Crocheting left-handed, start every row from the other side: the graph is the same, read each written row backwards.

In the round: every round is worked right to left, so all the numbers sit on the right.

C2C: start at the arrow in the bottom right corner. Each row is a diagonal: odd rows are worked up towards the top right (↗), even rows back down towards the bottom left (↙). For EMMA: rows 1–9: increase at both ends; rows 10–23: increase at the lower edge, decrease at the upper edge; rows 24–31: decrease at both ends.

39 characters in two sizes, one square per stitch or C2C tile. The small number under each letter is its width in squares. Leave 1 square between letters; a space between words is 5 plain squares in tall letters and 4 in small ones.

Questions

Before you pick up the hook.

How many squares does a name need?

Add up the letters and the gaps. In tall letters most letters are 5 squares wide (I and 1 are narrower); in small letters most are 3 (M, N and W are wider). EMMA is 23 squares across in tall letters and 19 in small ones. The generator does the sum as you type.

How do I put a name on a C2C blanket?

Enter the blanket's size in tiles under "Graph size" and the name is centred both ways; the written rows then cover the whole blanket. Our Reindeer Hearts C2C Blanket is 45 × 56 tiles: EMMA centred on a graph that size is 100 diagonal rows, with 11 tiles to the left of the name and 24 rows above it.

Tapestry crochet in rows or in the round?

Both work. In rows the graph is read back and forth, which the row numbers show; in the round, without turning, every round is read from the right. Choose one under "How will you crochet it?" and the written rows follow it.

Is there a lower-case or cursive alphabet?

Not yet. The generator has capitals A–Z, numbers 0–9, a hyphen, a full stop and an apostrophe, in two sizes. Accented letters are worked without the accent, so Zoë becomes ZOE.

I knit too. Is there a knitting version?

Yes: the knitting alphabet chart generator uses the same letters and counts floats for Fair Isle, bobbins for intarsia and stitches for duplicate stitch.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no account and we do not ask for your email. The PNG and the PDF are made in your browser.
